Every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month (every year in June, July, August, November, and December we meet the 2nd Friday ONLY7-8:30pm a FREE support group is offered to individuals struggling with OCD and other related disorders, family members of those listed above, as well as any interested professionals. Located at Mesa Vista Hospital's Day Treatment Lounge, (858.278.4110) 7850 Vista Hill Ave. Kearny Mesa, CA.

What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder(OCD)?

OCD was once considered an anxiety disorder, but since the new Diagnostic Statistic Manual (DSM-V) has been published (May 2013), OCD was made into a category of its own called "Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders". OCD is still characterized by the presence of frightening or disturbing intrusive, unwanted thoughts or images, nonsense words or even music (obsessions), or repetitive or stylized behaviors designed to reduce the anxiety from the obsessions (compulsions), or both. Both situations are usually recognized by the individual as irrational (except sometimes in children), and are usually ego-dystonic (thoughts/behaviors that donot fit with one's sense of self). In fact, people are often so scared or ashamed of having these thoughts that they don't admit them to their doctors and suffer in silence for an average of 17 years before getting treatment.

Obsessions**  are intrusive thoughts that create anxiety and usually demand that something be done to reduce that feeling.

Some examples of obsessions include:

  • contamination fears 

    (fears in all examples listed can also be represented by disgust or uncertainty)

  • harming fears (to self or others)
  • fear of doing something wrong in sexual/religious/moral context
  • excessive concern about justice, symmetry, or knowing something
  • fear of not having something that will be needed
  • fear of illness or disease
Additionally, obsessions can also be intrusive nonsense words, music, or other non-threatening thoughts, even "urges" to have something done a certain way, such as touch, tap, rub, or ordering and arranging.

Compulsions (also referred to as rituals) are behaviors that serve the function of reducing anxiety from the obsessions, even if they don't seem rationally related to the obsession.
Some examples of compulsions include:
  • washing and/or cleaning
  • checking
  • counting
  • avoiding
  • praying
  • seeking reassurance
  • ordering/arranging
  • repeating
  • talking or asking
  • hoarding/saving
  • thinking (mental rituals different from obsessions)

Obsessions cause anxiety; anxiety is a condition that people dislike intensely, and

because of that people try to get rid of the anxiety by doing something that

promises to provide relief, which is a compulsion. Unfortunately the

compulsion/ritual only ever gives temporary relief; the obsession always comes 

back and the cycle repeats.

NOTE: Just because somebody doesn't wash or do something repeatedly, does not mean they don't have OCD!

**Please note "obsessions" in the context of OCD should not be confused with being "obsessed" with something one enjoys such as a celebrity.
